Drop in registered unemployed
The registered unemployed last month declined by 318, or 4.7 per cent, when compared to the corresponding month last year.
The number of people registering for employment amounted to 6,510, the National Statistics Office said.
It said that according to administrative records held at the Employment and Training Corporation, the number of people registering for work in July amounted to 6,510 - 5,809 in Malta and 701 in Gozo.
When compared to last year, registered unemployment decreased by 331 in Malta, and went up by 13 in Gozo.
The number of men on the unemployment register amounted to 5,094, while women numbered 1,416.
Over the corresponding month in 2010, the incidence of unemployment decreased for both men and women, by 282 and 36, respectively.
In comparison to the previous year, unemployment declined across all the age groups, with the largest absolute drop being recorded among persons aged 45 and over.
Those registering for work for less than 20 weeks remained practically unchanged while those who had been registering for work for more than one year dropped by 243, or 9.5 per cent.
Most unemployed men were seeking occupations related to services, sales and crafts, whereas women sought clerical and service-oriented occupations.
In March 2011, the registered unemployment rate, excluding part-timers, was 4.3 per cent of the labour supply. This rate stood at 5.1 per cent for men and 2.7 per cent for women. The registered unemployment rate among workers aged 45 and over was 4.5 per cent, while that in respect of those aged less than 25 stood at 5.1 per cent.

Mr Vella during the labour era the Maltese workers were given good and well paid jobs. THe PN could never silence the labour in this regard. The bad things that is happening under GonziPN is the quality of jobs our employees are given and how much they are paid. If you are a patented Nationalist and just say that you thought everything is going badly is just giving your bias when comparing the labour with the PN that after 25 years your PN has done very little. Examples are better that your bias. An archiect graduating from the university of Malta working for a company is paid net salary below 1,000€ a month. Same for employees working for legal companies after graduating as lawyers. A lot of industrial employees are paid below the national wage offered by the MLP and never revised by any hearth throbbing PN administration . The conditions offered to employees and the environment they are working in are worst than those of those sanctuaries that keep dogs and other animals. Employees cannot better their conditions of work and they are exploited by employers because if they organize themselves to form unions they are threatened and expelled from work. This is the industrial democracy that your PN Mr Vella brought to the new Maltese labor culture. Be also informed that during the gloom and doom of the MLP everybody has the right to join unions and nobody was threatened by any employer. Check how many employees joined unions during the MLP era and better their conditions of work and acquire decent wages and compare it with the regime that you side with. The contrast you get is that employees are living in a state of terror that will silence your GonziPN and not the labour elves.

Can you explain how "GoNziPn" comes into it at all? One is reminded of years gone by when, if a patient survived 'it was thanks to the intercession of the priest' whereas if the patient passed away 'it was the fault of the doctor'. People were very gullible then; not anymore. Not even an unofficial 'Ministry for Favourable Statistics' will manage to fool all of the people; some will be impressed, yes, but definitely not all.

New employment is of the least value added type, mostly attached to the public sector through private contractors.
Work has been devalued in order to remain competitive....they can go with wages below the minimum wage, no sick leave entitlement and hardly any leave....not to mention long working hours....some not far away from slaving conditions...

Well done and a big round of applause for our government
I bet that at least half of those 4.3% do have a job or some source of income, or do not want to work at all.
with some more effort we can bring it down even more!

Quote; "In March 2011, the registered unemployment rate, excluding part-timers, was 4.3 per cent of the labour supply"
In Germany it is 6%, UK 8%, USA 9% - Well done the Government ! A success story we can be proud of, and still be aware that there are difficult times ahead so no time to be complacent.
PS All of the regular 'doomsayer' commentators can take a day off
