The main match from the 2011 Summer League on Saturday pitted together former sole leaders Marsa against their hot pursuers Melita.

Marsa batted first and Melita did well in their bowling with some very good figures.

The stand-out performers were Martin Llewelyn, who took four wickets, and Joy Ghoseroy who felled three. Nowell Khosla was also impressive in his spell. He only had 15 runs taken from his five overs.

For Marsa, Ronnie Sacco was their top scorer – 16 runs not out.

The next high score was extras, 15. No other batsman made it into double figures as Marsa were bowled out for 65 runs, their lowest total in the league so far.

Melita were quite confident with the bat until George Agius ripped through their top order which had them worrying.

Dave Borg took two other wickets to jolt Melita’s hopes but then in walked David Eyon to the crease and he made light work of some very good bowling, smashing 20 runs from 15 balls and guiding his team to victory and ten priceless points.

Melita are now equal on points with Marsa at the top of the standings with 25 points each.

In the second game of the day, Overseas batted first and chalked up the highest total of 133 runs at Krishna’s expense.

Mike Caruana (21), Justin Barloggio (29) and Sean Bradley (24) were the main contributors to the score. For Krishna, Darren Grech bowled well and took two wickets.

The Krishna reply was off to a flyer with Andy Lenard hitting 29 runs from 18 balls and Sunny Krishna 35 from 28 balls. Grech added 21 runs and had to retire.

When these three batsmen left the crease, the Krishna resistance fell and Overseas went on to win their first game by 11 runs.

Caruana took three wickets while Roger Bradley took two.

Overseas earned nine points for their win to move third in the standings with 11 points. Krishna follow one point behind.

Next Saturday, Melita take on Krishna and Marsa play against Overseas.
