Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi this morning spoke by telephone with the chairman of the Libyan Transitional Council, Mustafa Jibril and congratulated the Libyan people on its march 'towards freedom and respect for human rights,' the government said.

Dr Gonzi confirmed that the Maltese people were 'close' to the Libyan people in this important point in their history.

He reiterated Malta's support for the rebuilding of Libya as a modern and democratic country based on freedom, justice and human rights.

Dr Jibril thanked Dr Gonzi and the Maltese people for their support over the past few months. He looked forward to relations between the two countries being rebuilt on the basis of genuine friendship and reciprocal respect.

Dr Jibril particularly thanked Dr Gonzi for having kept in regular contact with him over the past months and for Malta's support.

He said he hoped to be able to visit Malta in the coming months.
