The height of the chimneys at the Delimara power plant extension could not be regulated after they were built, the Labour Party’s spokesman for sustainable development, Leo Brincat, said yesterday.

Mr Brincat referred to what the planning authority said in reaction to comments by Marsaxlokk deputy mayor Edric Micallef who said the height of the chimneys had been extended without the necessary planning permit.

On Saturday, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority admitted that when it had approved the full development application of the extension to the Delimara power plant in May 2009 the final height of the chimneys had remained a reserved matter.

It said the height would be decided after the integrated pollution prevention and control permit was issued, adding that this would be published for consultation shortly.

However, Mr Brincat said Mepa’s statement was an admission of guilt in that it confirmed that Enemalta had been allowed to extend the chimneys before the consultation process.
