The new bells for the belfry of Għajnsielem parish church arrived on August 11 after a long trip from Cornille-Havard bell foundry in Normandy, France.

Hunderds of parishioners gathered at Mġarr harbour to welcome the set of eight bells. The biggest bell, the five-tonne ‘Maria Loreta’, is about two metres in diameter, the second biggest in Malta and Gozo.

The bells were carried to the main square, where they were placed on pillars. Archpriest Can. Frankie Bajada delivered a speech to mark the occasion.

Last Sunday, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech presided over the ceremony of the blessing of the new bells. Maltapost also issued a special hand postmark ‘Parroċċa Madonna ta’ Loreto Għajnsielem – Ghawdex.’

The bells will crown the majestic bell tower on December 10, the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Loreto.
