Enemalta's Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control application, which will regulate and condition the operational aspect of the extension to the Delimara power plant, is to be issued for public consultation by the planning authority.

In a statement, Mepa referred to a statement by the Marsaxlokk deputy mayor yesterday who claimed that the extension's chimneys have been erected without the necessary MEPA permit,

Mepa said that when it approved the full development application for the development of the extension in May 2009, it had established that the final height of the chimneys remained a reserved matter.

The height, it said, will be decided after the IPPC permit is issued. The criteria for the issuing of such permit are determined by EU regulations.

This permit will ensure that the Delimara power station will operate according to EU directives and ensure a satisfactory environmental management of the installation.

It will ensure that Enemalta will not only be using the best available technology but would also oblige it to comply with EU directives related to emission limit values for pollutants, management of waste and noise.

Enemalta would also be required to monitor and supply all environmental data to the local councils within the area.
