Gatt, Vella Busuttil raise bar with new records

The Malta Weightlifting Association has just held a competition for youths and cadets.

Cottonera, Falcons and Starmax were the three participating clubs. For most of the lifters, aged 10 to 15 years, this was their first competitive experience.

The boys’ cadet section was won by Miguel Grixti with 92 points. He was followed by Isaac Fava, Kurt Micallef and Malcolm Camilleri. The girls’ winner in this category was Beatrix Galea with 66 points. Andrea Busuttil was the runner-up.

Thomas Farrugia claimed the honours in the competition for youths with 156 points. Luca Grixti and Ryan Borg finished second and third respectively.

Nicole Gatt totalled 123 points in the girls’ youth competition to claim top spot ahead of Destiny Vella Busuttil, Victoria Battistino, Ivana Micallef, Nadine Gatt and Oriana Cachia.

Ten new marks were estab-lished during this competition. Six of the records were broken by Gatt in the 48kg category when she lifted 50kgs Clean & Jerk for a total of 80kgs.

Vella Busuttil set new marks in the 63kgs youths and juniors when she lifted 50kgs Clean & Jerk for a total of 85kgs.

The competition was run by association president Jesmond Caruana and co-ordinated by Mark Farrugia.

Meanwhile, Rodmar Pulis also figured in this competition as part of his final preparations for the European Youth Championships in Poland next week.

Caruana will be travelling with Pulis to Poland.

On the invitation of the European Weightlifting Federation, Caruana will act as technical official during the champ-ionships.
