Enemalta gets ISO 14001 certification
Enemalta has been awarded the ISO 14001 certification, an Internationally recognised Environmental Management Standard that specifies a set of environmental management requirements for environmental management systems.
Enemalta received the ISO 14001 certification from Certiquality, an EU accredited certification body, for all its generation activities at Delimara and Marsa power stations, as well as for its distribution and development activities making it one of the largest company on the island that has acquired this prestigious environmental certification.
The purpose of this standard is to help all types of organisations protect the environment, prevent pollution, and improve their environmental performance on an ongoing basis.
This standard can be integrated with other management requirements and help organisations achieve economic goals.
Enemalta Corporation has acknowledged various challenges that it faces in environmental protection, both on its own premises as well as a protection to the country's environment.
Being a major industry in Malta, Enemalta poses a threat to the ecology by affecting the air, land and sea conditions. With EU accession, Marsa and Delimara power stations had to comply with the Integrated Preventive Pollution Control Directives.
The corporation, in a planned and documented manner, will be implementing the requirements set out by the Directive.
The implementation of the ISO 14001 standards involves a myriad of activities and coordination, as well as changes in perception to attain the desired benchmarks.
As a requisite to the standard, Enemalta now has a compiled environmental policy that states its "mission" and commitment towards the environment.

Each and every company in Malta should strive to get this certification. It would help our country a lot. A great well done to all the people working at the two power stations for achieving such a goal.

Does Enemalta cover the power stations? If the answer is YES, then how on earth did they manage to obtain this certtification?
Power stations (both Marsa as well as the new one that is to be functioning soon, hopefully) are all environment polluting in Malta and they can do nothing if not a change to alternative energy is made.
I really am amazed how Enemalta obtains such ISO standards when quite frankly these are Bible for what they preach.
We all know this and commenting further would be superfluous, however I cannot and will not digest the fact that they obtained such standards when in fact they are polluting everywhere in Malta.

Bir rispett kollu habib ,l-ewwel kun intiz fir rapport li harget l Enemalta rigward minn meta beda il process ta l-implimentazzjoni ta l- EMS u wara applikat ghal dan ic certifikat ISO 14001. Wara li gew nies professjonali minn barra biex jassitu jekk l- Enemalta tilhaqx il kriterji ta dan ic certifikat ,dawn waslu ghal kunkluzzjoni u l-enemalta b'success akwistat dan ic certifikat bis sahha tal haddiema kollha. Jekk trid tkun izjed infurmat dawr dan, idhol fis site ta l-Enemalta jew fil link ta taht. ISO 14001 ma japplikax biss fuq' environmental pollution" imma f'hafna oqsma ohrajn.

@paul portelli:
yes, enemalta cover both power stations and ISO have been there too!
in one sentence you acknowledge that "ISO standards are Bible for what they preach", yet in the following sentence you "cannot and will not digest the fact that they (enemalta) obtained such standards when in fact they are polluting everywhere in Malta."
can you make up your mind please!

So you prefer to live with your prejudices about Enemalta and not by what internationally recognised environmental authorities state and certify.

Mr. Busuttil,
Nirrispetta dak kollu li qed tghid, izda meta taqra dak li nkiteb hawn fuq wiehed malajr imur hazin dwar dak li attwalment qed isehh u dak li kellu jsehh. B'dan nixtieq nghid li meta wiehed jaqra l-media report wiehed mill-ewwel imur mohhu fuq Pollution, u xejn aktar. Jien nikkonferma li l-ISO certification m'huwiex semplicement ikopri l-element uniku ta' pollution, izda jmur aktar il-boghod minn hekk, u ghalhekk ikkummentajt dak li kkummentajt. Izda wiehed irid ikun aktar aqli dwar x'johrog fuq il-midja u kif johrog dak li jrid jghid, ghaliex mhux kulhadd bhali u bhalek li jista jaghzel u jifhem x'qed jintqal.
Mr. Sacco,
Nifhem il-punt tieghek, imma meta wiehed janalizza dak li ntqal no wonder li jhossu konfuz dwar dak li nkiteb. Imma veru ghandek ragun ghax anke l-hsieb tieghi fhimtu int u ghaldaqstant niehu pjacir li gejt tal-istess opinjoni tieghi li dak li qed jintwera fir-rapport fuq il-gazzetta mhuwiex jirrifletti l-verita kollha.

@paul mallia:
what kind of truth do you need? a pollutant-free fuel/gas managed power station does not exist! that is the truth! and since solar and wind energy are still in their infancy, we have to cope with it or go back to living in caves! the report says clearly that the certificate was awarded for environmental protection and pollution control (Integrated Preventive Pollution Control Directives) not for pollution elimination. enemalta is always featured as bad news, but now that, for once, it made it to some good news, some clairvoyants still try to scorn the good image earned by hard work from all enemalta employees!

Enemalta has made tremendous improvements since Malta joined the EU. Mr Mallia is wrong in questioning the validity of EMS certification and the ISO14001 standard. The bad old days when what matterred was to keep electricity tariffs low are now long past and we have to maintain high environmental standards.
Actually few power stations in Europe actually bother to obtain ISO 14001 certification, but MEPA has wisely imposed this condition on Enemalta.

Well done to all employees who were involved in this. Obtaining this certificate involved a huge effort . Now all Maltese will reap the benefits through a cleaner environment.
