A record 62 swimmers will take part in the two long distance events Birkirkara St Joseph SC are organising on Saturday.

Fifty-six swimmers will take in the annual Gozo-Malta swim while six others will compete in the second edition of the Malta-Gozo-Malta challenge.

A pre-event meeting for swimmers and coaches is being held today during which the organisers will provide details on how both events will proceed.

The 11km Malta-Gozo-Malta swim, starting at 6.15 a.m. from Marfa, will take swimmers to Ras il-Qala in Gozo and back.

The 5.5-kilometre Gozo-Malta swim will set off at 8.15 a.m. from Ras il-Qala towards a finishing waypoint at Marfa.

All swimmers have met the qualifying criteria to enter these events which are being organised under the auspices of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta.

Presiding over the presentation of awards ceremony will be ASA head Joe Caruana Curran and Birkirkara St Joseph president Ray Grech.

The race route will be closed for maritime traffic during the events.

Funds raised during Saturday’s races will be donated to the Inspire Foundation. PowerBar and Yellow Pages are the main sponsors of the open water swimming events organised by Birkirkara St Joseph.

The first swimmers in the Gozo-Malta race are expected to reach Marfa at approximately 9.15 a.m.
