Twenty years ago, a small number of canoe enthusiasts answered an advert in the free press of the day, placed by avid water sport enthusiast Craig Wightman, to meet on a beach to just ‘see if anybody’s out there’.

Julian Mamo, Pierre Chircop and Vince Tanti answered the call and together all four were instrumental in setting up a solid foundation for the sport in Malta.

In fact, from that first meeting, the Malta Canoe Club came to life and eventually the Malta Canoe Federation (MCF).

The sport flourished with pivotal members being too numerous to mention.

So, just ‘to see who’s out there’ the MCF is doing it again on Sunday for a similar promotion.

In a statement, the federation said they would be happy to know if new kayakers might be interested to meet their peers and get more acquainted with the sport.

The venue for Sunday (9.30-11.30 a.m.) will be the federation’s head-quarters in Marsamxett.

Qualified personnel will be at hand for touring, racing and canoe polo demonstrations.
