Rugby Union: Wales star Gavin Henson will be sidelined for the start of the World Cup and is likely to miss the entire tournament after undergoing surgery on a dislocated bone in his right wrist. Henson suffered the injury in the first half of Saturday’s 19-9 victory over England in a World Cup warm-up fixture in Cardiff.

Boxing: Mexico’s Abner Mares won the International Boxing Federation bantamweight title and remained unbeaten as a professional with a majority decision over Joseph Agbeko. Mares knocked Agbeko down in the 11th round with an apparent low blow before going on to win the fight on two of the three judges scorecards in the bantamweight tournament final.

Badminton: China’s Lin Dan beat top seed Lee Chong Wei, of Malaysia, 20-22, 21-14, 23-21 to win the men’s badminton world title for the fourth time yesterday. Olympic champion Lin had a thrilling preparation for the defence of his title at next year’s London Games when he saved two match points to beat his great rival Lee in a sensational 81-minute final.

Tennis: Serena Williams won the WTA Rogers Cup title yesterday, beating Australia’s Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-2, underlining her credentials as a US Open favourite when the last Grand Slam event of the season starts in two weeks’ time. Williams hammered nine aces and won 89 per cent of her first serve points in beating Stosur in straight sets.
