Malta’s Theresa Brousson won the 2011 English Scrabble Open, one of the toughest and most prestigious events on the UK Scrabble calendar.

Brousson managed the feat against a daunting field of players, which included former world champion Nigel Richards.

Richards is considered by many of his peers as the most brilliant scrabble player currently in activity.

Brousson beat him three times in as many encounters in the English Open, thus forcing the New Zealander to settle for second place.

The win has hoisted Brousson to seventh place in the British overall ranking, and has boosted her confidence enormously ahead of the World Championship in Poland later this year where Brousson, together with David Delicata, will represent the country.

On the domestic front, Brousson is currently engaged in defending her Summer League title.

This year’s tournament is slowly heating up to the crucial knock-out phase that will culminate in the final in September.
