Valletta police on the beat, using Segways

Policemen this morning started testing Segways on patrol in Valletta.

Informed sources said the Malta Police are considering the purchase of a number of Segways fitted for police work, including a siren and space for radio and other equipment.

The Segway is a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicle used mostly in pedestrian areas.

Micheal Aguis u min jaħdem fuq xi yacht fis-sħana tremenda, jew fit-toroq fix-xemx, jew jibni jew f'xi barriera u xogħol ieħor dawk mhux jaħdmu fis-sħaan u xemx ikunu?

Mhux qed ngħid li għandhom ibatu għax kieku jista' jkun ħadd ma għandu jbati xejn, imma għalmenu jekk mhux rota minflok is-segways kellhom jixtrulhom dawk il-muturi li jaħdmu bil-batteriji li kienu jqumu inqas minn Lm200 u jimxu distanza twila sewwa qabel ikollhom jiċċarġjaw il-batterija.

Kif ingħad l-inqas mudell jiswa eluf ta' ewros. Jekk jiswa €5,000 bi prezz ta' wieħed kienu jinxtraw 25 mutur bil-batterija u minflok pulizija wieħed kien ikun hemm 25 wieħed li jkollhom dan il-mezz ta' trasport. Naħseb li ma tridx tkun għaref wisq biex tinduna liema minnhom ikun jaqbel sur Micheal Aguis.

Mela għall-mediċini m'hemmx flus u minflok naraw kif nonfqu l-flus sewwa inberbquhom għax dan huwa każ ċar ta' tberbiq ta' flus.

Dear Micheal you are calling people "gahan" but i think you have never been on a bicycle. Any one who rides a bicycle in hot weather like Malta will tell you that the wind will cool you down. it is very surprising but if you wear light clothes the heat is not a problem. the only problem with heat is encountered when you climb up hills as you have to generate alot of effort and the speed is low. so you lose the aircondition effect of the bike. just thought i should point this out so that you do not look like a gahan malti.
regarding work and sports, why is it not possible to do exercise when you work ? keeps u awake and makes you lose the love handles. my customers now are used to me arriving in their shop on an emergency delivery by bike. zebbug- mscala 30 minutes. thats not much slower then a car.

Ara imbagħad biex xi uffiċjal jidher ħelu minflok kif il-Korp huwa obbligat li jagmel li jipprovdi pulizija għat-tliet-ijiem tal-festa, jipprovdihom il-ġimgħa kollha bi spejjeż tagħna minflok jitħallsu mill-każini tal-banda u oħrajn. Ara għalhekk isibuhom il-flus.

But tell me.... what does arriva have to do with the subject...... i think we all heard about enough of Maltese gem gem from people like you about arriva dont you think.... second, the next time you ll be in Valletta and god forbid something happens to you, and you need assistance from a policeman patrolling on a segway , don't let him help you because he looks silly and you might too, or don`t let him see you from the considerable height he is in, looking over everyone else and letting everyone else see him just in case in need of any assistance. LAST BUT NOT LEAST. ONE THING IS FOR SURE THAT WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH EVERYONE KNOWS HOW TO DIAL 112 FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE, SILLY OR NOT WE ALL AND I MEAN ALL WOULD NT LAST A SINGLE AFTERNOON WITH OUT THE POLICE !!!!!!!

Their laughter will be "extinguished" when they see Tottenham, Ealing, Camden, Clapham, Manchester, Wolverhampton, Liverpool, Bristol etc. etc. burning like hell. Or when they think about what happened in Oslo and Utoya. Here the police are dancing. There the police are trying very hard not to be the laughing stock of Europe.

Segway's biggest customers are police departments all over the world. They are perfect for certain areas for many reasons, like extending the range of the patrols, giving an officer a higher view over a crowd, low noise and less alarming than a horse, lower cost of ownership over time and so on. As for those stepped streets, that's a tough one, maybe don't use them there!

Alistair Busuttil

Aug 12th 2011, 06:14

you are wrong sorry but segways are used by police forces abroad as well, afterall they are only testing them right now

John Scerri

Aug 12th 2011, 07:26

If you have ever visited huge shopping malls abroad like in Romania you would see all security staff and police using segways.

This is nothing new but a very welcome working aid for our police corps.

Segways have been around for a few years now . its about time we appreciate that this is not a toy and can be used in many places . Materdei hospital, the airport, Paceville,

Dominic Williams

Aug 12th 2011, 04:34

Alfred can you tell us how on earth the police are going to patrol the streets of Valletta with these segways....do you really think that in a case of 'snatch and run' the police will be capable to catch the perpetrator especially if the latter takes off to one of the steps streets in our capital?

Please can you tell us since when a laughing stock became ' gemgem'?

Alfred Grech

Aug 12th 2011, 17:55

Dominic, snatch and run are rare - the police presence in the streets of Valletta makes them safer. If they need to run after someone, they can dismount their segway and run after the guy.

They may look strange because we're not used to seeing them on the segway but we'll get used to them.

Mr Gaffarena I must say yhat I do not agree with you at all. Firstly, your comments show that you are prejudiced against the police. You are for sure anti police or negativly biased. In a city were the roads are out of bounds for vehicles for most of the day I think that the segway is most ideal to have the farthest corners reached in the shortest time possible. I have lately seen the segway at work in Rome. They are considered as a very efficient means of transport for the police. Does that make the Italy america, germany and Holland mickymouse countries as well. So speak for yourself please and do not come to conclusions. There could be an accident involving a segway here and there yes That can be expected after all we are all humans but there are accidents involving vehicles every day. \so should we ban all vehicle as well.? There are often accidents in paceville almost every week. \should we close down paceville? so let's be reasonable man.

Lino Parascandalo

Aug 12th 2011, 17:07

Well excuse from miss-understanding your previous comment the one which you described our country and the police corp mickey mouse i was a bit short and sweet unlike this one which seems that you have quite explained your self much more clearly though needless to say the fact once again you called our malta mickey mouse country show that your are shameful that you are a Maltese ...... on the other hand i like you to reply on mr Paul cassar`s comment which i think had hit the nail on its head regarding your comment especially the part is that you seem ( not accusing ) you to be an anti police citizen.......

Mr Peter Agius

Aug 11th 2011, 22:02

On a Segway you have that chance. On an airliner.....no way!

Victor Pulis

Aug 11th 2011, 20:38

Peter Shaw

Aug 11th 2011, 23:28

Valletta Police station is a circus !!!

Anthony Farrugia

Aug 12th 2011, 07:52

Well said Stephen.....it also means that two Police officers on a Segway can cover the area properly which would otherwise require at least 6 officers if not more. More than anything they are very visible and that is also important. If they are called they can get there in a very short time.

So again this is a great idea and we need more of the same.

Mr Peter Agius

Aug 11th 2011, 17:54

Just stand in his way when he's charging.

Lino Parascandalo

Aug 11th 2011, 18:38

Mr Gaffarena I think your comment should be considered as non-sense every single part of it..

First and foremost your knowledge seems to me that it is very poor since you are comparing our country a mickey mouse country because you really don't know what a mickey mouse country look like.

second
I myself can understand the true effort of a police officer stationed at Valletta, which has to be performed in order to cover the streets of Valletta, I for one knows for I am a police officer stationed at Valletta police station, which station that is now situated almost at the very end of Valletta ( near the house of parliament) .. imagine yourself Mr Gaffarena from Archbishop street you have to go all the way up in a hurry because of an emergency over to the new bus terminus at Puturial.

Last but not least I
Personally would like to thank our commissioner who yes, is always looking for new ways of investing in his well reformed police force especially in the two Segways he provided us in Valletta police station !

Mr Adrian Borg Cardona

Patrick Camilleri

Aug 11th 2011, 17:52

Use your head ......after an couple of hours walking the beat in this heat a poor cop is too exhausted to chase anyone. This way he is as fresh as a daisy when he hops off the segway to chase a thief!

Mr Peter Agius

Aug 11th 2011, 18:10

The Italian police only had 2 Lamborghini Gallardo which they used for parades and to patrol their massive Autostradas. As you said one of them was wrecked beyond repair. For normal duties they have normal Alfa Romeos like our Mobile Squad has Ford Focuses. For city work which does not involve rapid response they have Fiat Pandas like our district police who have Skodas.

Mr Tony Gatt

Aug 11th 2011, 18:12

Give them bikes- cheaper and faster and they need the exercise

Jonathan Cole

Aug 11th 2011, 17:38

You really did a very good comparison. USA Germany, welll we are just a little bit smaller. Compare London with Valletta. What about all those uphills and downhills; would they still keep their balance or is it that they would only patrol the even parts of these roads. We have become a country of show offs-l-aqwa il-propoganda fis sustanza xejn.

Alexander Pace

Aug 11th 2011, 23:09

To Carmel: Segway can be ridden on uphill as much as "Tella ta Alla w Ommu" and when you are coming down the hill, Segway batteries are being charged. Just a small note. And so what, if we are a smaller country than Germany or USA? thank you.

Mr Clyde Ellul

Mr Adrian Borg Cardona

Aug 11th 2011, 17:43

Stop grumbling against the Maltese, you Maltese gemgem you!

Mark Ellul

Aug 11th 2011, 17:03

It is not a matter of grumbling sir, but a matter of practicality. Why do the police need the segways - as others have suggested the majority of people find segways a joke. It is a well known fact that the Maltese police force isn't the fittest of them all so why replace walking and running with segways? It would be more beneficial to invest time and money in proper training exercises, equipment etc to turn the majority of big-bellied police into fit running reliable policemen. If this is not possible other alternatives like electric motorbikes are also in my opinion less humiliating than a segway. Maltese towns aren't that big and dangerous in that we need segways to patrol the streets nor the city of Valletta for that matter. It would be again physically and economically much more viable to not 'invest' in these segways which upon researching are quite expensive to buy in ratio to their usability and practicality and compared to other alternative motors.

Mr robert micallef

racing bicycle
cruising speed 25 km

Why ? Don't think they will use them much since most of the time they will be parked ideal while texting sms messages or staring blank during "guard" duties with road works, crane work, etc, obviously instead of managing traffic. Having said that though hats off to the few wardens that do their job diligently and logically.

Mr D Farrugia

Aug 11th 2011, 14:06

This is not true. Police use horses in London for patrolling. They can be seen everywhere. Mr Joe Cardona must have been with the head in the clouds while visiting major cities in England which i am assuming includes London :)
