Tidy tourists are clearly keen to be seen to be clean when away on holiday, according to a survey.

As many as 59 per cent of Britons admit to having tidied their hotel room before the cleaners come in, the poll by Hotels.com found.

Around the same number said it was “rude” to leave their room in a mess, while 60 per cent said they made the bed. Also, 45 per cent folded the towels and 11 per cent even went as far as cleaning the toilet.

Only four per cent of the 2,000 people polled admitted they enjoyed cleaning, but 45 per cent were anxious not be labelled “messy” by hotel staff, while 43 per cent said they cleaned up as a matter of routine and 27 per cent disliked hotel staff touching their belongings.

Travellers from south-east England were most likely to beat the cleaners to it, with 67 per cent saying they tidied their room themselves.

Most happy to let hotel staff do all the work were those from East Anglia, with only 39 per cent admitting to tidying up.

Hotels.com communications director Alison Couper said: “Going on holiday is all about getting a break from the routine of home life, yet it’s evident many Brits just can’t drop the cleaning when away.”
