An independent majority reigns at the former Nationalist Party stronghold Sliema local council after Yves “Bobby” Calì (Nationalist) and Martin Debono (Labour) resigned last week to clear their names against criminal charges. They join deputy mayor Cyrus Engerer, Nikki Dimech and Sandra Camilleri who were PN councillors but are now independent. Sarah Carabott took to the streets of Sliema to see what residents think – the majority do not believe there should be an immediate re-election.

Rita Pace, 80

I’ve always received good feedback from the council. I don’t think there should be an immediate re-election as it is doing quite well... and I’m not that fussy.

Nella Grech, 34

The Sliema council is not doing badly. They’ve done a lot of work but there’s always room for improvement. I don’t think local council issues should be politicised and people should vote for the person not the party. I don’t think there should be a re-election.

Tonio Pellegrini Petit, 84

We’re living quite well and I don’t think the local council is doing badly, so I don’t think there should be a re-election.

Christine Xuereb, 30

I haven’t had any problems with regard to the Sliema council. I’ve heard about what’s going on but I don’t think I’m in a position to say whether there should be a re-election or not.

Rod Hill, 57

Of course, when allegations of criminal behaviour result in resignations, you need to have a re-election and let people take a decision again.

Evelyn Calleja, 87

The councillors have always been helpful when I was in need. I don’t know much about politics but if someone did something wrong it’s wrong. I don’t know about re-electing the councillors: Is there anyone you can choose from?

Pamela Michaux, 26

I am not aware of the council’s ongoing changes but I am happier here than I was in France. I am quite content with the current local council administration.

Carmelo Sullivan, 58

There are still some things the council could work on. It could do away with negligence, for example. I think there should be a re-election to further improve the current situation.
