Road mess

Residents of St Ignatius Junction in Sliema are complaining about the rubbish that accumulates in the streets close by over the weekend as other residents, many of whom are foreign, take out their garbage after collection time. Garbage bags are taken out late on Saturdays, after the the rubbish truck calls, and also on Sundays leading to a mess in the roads as stays rip open bags in search of food while residents have to deal with the unsightly mess.

It is not only foreigners. Some of the residents at Belmonte Heights in St. Ignatius Junction are Maltese. When I politely told a Maltese lady that garbage was not to be brought out in the eveing her reply was that everyone else does so.
a property of the size of Belmonte heights should have its own on site skip!1

I agree with Mr Psaila it's not only foreigners for sure, this mess is not only in Sliema also where I live around bringin sites, in our rural areas, I have taken so many photos and if The Times wants them I gladly send them!!! People are dumping everywhere as long as they don't have the mess in their homes they don't care, these people have no idea the damage and health hazard they are causing!!!
Time to really get serious over this as it's out of control for sure!!!

In other countrys people throw garbage bags into trash container. Amazing I am on Malta 4 months and I have seen recycling bins only in one place - St George's Beach.

I 100% agree with the "many of whom are foreign"... Next door there used to be a chinese couple who would always put garbage bags on the pavement, without closing them properly from the top...
The worst thing is that there is a skip literally 20 seconds away!!! You have to be completely stupid not to realize...

Triq il-Bramel in Swieqi is exactly the same.....it must be the dirtiest street in the area and looks more like a slum.
Rubbish is taken out at any time - even by the residents themselves, who should know better, and even during the winter months, so I don't think it's a case of smells in summer. It's a case of keeping the house clean but not giving a fig about public property; it is a clear reflection of what our society has degenerated into today - utter selfishiness. Good neighbourliness is a thing of the past. This cul-de-sac even sports a dogs' latrine, a car museum, a mobile disco and a water park! Three dirty, unused cars take up precious parking spaces and collect dirt and debris around the wheels. The street sweepers haven't been seen for months.
Unfortunately, the Swieqi Local Council says it is "unable to do anything", thereby indirectly approving of the situation.

This rubbish is happening all over Sliema and not just St Ignatius str. the problem lies in the collection timeing which is not right. People prefer to take out their rubbish bags later in the day then early morning for the simple reason that to keep the foul smell of left over fruit , vegetable and what not over night just does not go down well the the traditional maltese household. the only solution to the start the collection after 1 pm, other wise what eveer regulation you make these will never work.

The problem is lack of discipline, not bad timing. We are lucky enough to have an EXCELLENT garbage collection service in Malta, and yet some lazy people couldn't b bothered to cooperate with the sanitary services and take out their garbage and a civilised time. And yes, the problem is bad all over Sliema but it is extremely bad in St. Ignatious Junction. I pass through there daily and people often block the entire pavement with huge boxes full of garbage necessitating pedestrians to walk in the road.
