This site comprises a rocky plateau that forms part of the valley sides of Wied il-Miżieb and Wied tax-Xaqrani. The largest population of the national tree, the sandarac gum tree (għargħar) is found here, with about 150 specimens – hence representing Malta’s largest known population of this tree. This endangered tree formation is considered a remnant of a former widespread assemblage from the Mellieħa area.
The area also includes a considerable number of plant communities, including phrygana (xagħri) and pre-desert scrub habitat types. The fauna associated with the sandarac gum trees also include endemic species such as the beetle, which is found in soil at 10-30cms depth under the tree.
The area has been protected since 2001 as a nature reserve. It is also a Natura 2000 site and a special area of conservation of international importance.
Mepa declared this site as a Tree Protected Area on May 24, in accordance with the provisions of the Trees and Woodlands Protection Regulations (2011) as per Government Notice number 473/11.
