Malta Racing Club (MRC) chairman Matthew Brincat will remain at the helm of the horse racing organisation in Malta after withdrawing the resignation he handed in on July 25.

Dr Brincat yesterday issued a statement stating that on Saturday he withdrew his resignation letter, pledging to stay in office and continue to do his duties for the benefit of the horse racing com-munity at Marsa.

“I’m so fond of this sport and have great respect for the racing enthusiasts, that’s why I’ve decided not to go,” he said.

“The people at the racetrack deserve better. They were among those who urged me not to quit and now I want to see that my lifetime ambition of having top-class facilities at Marsa is fulfilled.”

Dr Brincat also dismissed speculation about the reasons for his resignation last month.

It had been rumoured that the MRC chairman was not pleased with the new Sports Village project at Marsa and that he had some differences with those in charge of the development.

“That is a long way from the truth,” he said.

“Those behind these baseless rumours gave a false impression of the true facts and did a lot of harm to the sport in the process.

“The reasons behind my decision to resign were purely personal and nothing else. There’s nothing sinister in that and each time I was asked about my de-cision to step down, I always an-swered that it was something that had to do with me alone.”

Dr Brincat added that he had been informed about the govern-ment’s vision and plans for Marsa ever since he was appointed MRC chairman.

“I knew about the development project since day one of my tenure at the club,” he said.

“The project always had my backing and I went public with my views on the issue.

“In fact, during the past few years I gave my contribution and colla-borated closely with the authorities concerned. We wanted to see that our recommendations for better services at Marsa were all listed in the document when the tender was issued.

“In the meantime, works at the racetrack are ongoing as we want to maintain our promise to Marsa patrons of providing the best facilities possible until the Sports Village project is completed.”
