The Gäuboden Folk Festival began in 1812 and has become one of Bavaria’s biggest, attracting around 1.2 million people every year despite having a major competitor in the form of Munich’s famous Oktoberfest.

There is plenty to do for both young and old, including a parade, funfair and, of course, lots and lots of beer drinking.

The beer is specially brewed; only breweries from Straubing or the surrounding county are allowed to serve beer there. There are seven large marquee-type beer tents in which to sample local food and beers and listen to traditional German folk music.

For many, however, the highlight is the procession through the town, signalling the start of the party.

Fly to Munich with Air Malta or Lufthansa. It is possible to travel by train from Munich to Straubing via Regensburg.
