Wied il-Ħut (l/o Rabat)

One world – Sustaining our future through protection

This site, which includes perennial springs, hosts one of the few wild stations for the very rare and critically endangered Mediterranean willow (żafżaf żgħir) in Malta. Also present are numerous and large trees of the black mulberry (tut), as well as olive trees (żebbuġ), carobs (ħarrub), tamarisk trees (bruk), bay laurel (rand) and pomegranates (rummien).

Among other cultivated tree species scattered in this area, one can also find pear trees (lanġas) and peach trees (ħawħ). The site was scheduled in 1996 as an area of ecological importance and is protected as a nature reserve and a special area of conservation of international importance. It is also a Natura 2000 site.

Mepa declared this site as a Tree Protected Area on May 24, in accordance with the provisions of the Trees and Woodlands Protection Regulations (2011) as per Government Notice number 473/11.
