Bail for 16-year-old charged with Paceville stabbing
A 16-year-old boy was this morning granted bail against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €10,000 after he pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of another teenager in Paceville early yesterday morning.
An 18-year-old from Sliema was stabbed at 1 a.m. yesterday following a club brawl. The man had to be rescued from a mob by the police.
The 16-year-old was charged with stabbing and seriously injuring the victim and with carrying a knife illegally and without a license.
Police inspector Daniel Zammit told the court in pleas on bail that it seemed to have become fashionable to go to Paceville to fight.
But defence lawyer Edward Gatt argued that the accused found himself in the midst of a fight and had to react in self-defence. He had a clean police record.

Alcohol is being sold to anyone, at any time of the day/night. This is apparent to everyone. The age limit is ignored. Minors are served alcohol, which can end in violence. Solution: enforce the law. Shut down retailers caught abusing. Take SEDQA back into our schools. Inform and educate.
Why do young foreigners 'fall' off balconies: because they're not allowed to drink where they come from, until they holiday here, and then they can't handle the booze.

According to inspector Daniel Zammit, it seems that it is becoming fashionable to go to Paceville to fight! Is this a new form of entertainment expressed by our younger generation??

Young lads have always fought each other - it is not new.

What was a 16 year old doing in Paceville at 1 a.m.? And why was he carrying a knife? Does he always carry a knife with him just in case he needed it for self-defence? Remember we are talking about a 16 year old boy here. Youths need more discipline from their parents.

Yes yes self defense.... thank god this poor boy had a knife with him. What a joke! perhaps the poor boy keeps a knife to peel oranges.Seriously the area is only one square Km,is it possible that after so many years police have not organised themselves within these literaly 4 streets?

Maybe it is time for a security and First Aid centre to be established at St Julians / Paceville .
Police are overstressed with traffic / domestic and criminal monitoring .
If you pay 2.50 Euro for a drink , you ptetend that 5c of it goes to a centre for your safety ... Bars / Clubs please organize yourselves ..

Though really prison sentences of 2 years don't make sense. Persons aged below 18 as far as I know can't be sent to prison. So this boy couldn't be sent to prison. I think a good punishment for him would be a dirty police record and a decent some of money to be paid by his parents. Maybe be forced to do community work like thugs are forced to do abroad sometimes. But seriously no offence but in my opinion half of the ideas you people are bringing up don't make sense AT ALL. First of all, I'm 17, almost 18. I go to paceville once a week to meet my friends and my girlfriend and have a drink or two and a chat. See? I'm only almost 18 yet I don't get in fights. What is this ideology that some of you bring up that people of my age cause trouble when some of you never even went to the real PV. Close the establishment? Paceville is the only real collective nightlife establihment on this island. Where would we go instead? Valletta? I bet many of you don't even know and care how unsafe it is to roam the streets there at night.
Or MAYBE the bouncers in every club would be more sincere and check EVERY one willing to enter a club. This way the police and sometimes even S.A.G. roaming PV can focus on order in the streets, rather than hunting for kids inside clubs. And the no under 21 entrance into PV- idea is just naive. I am 17, I have the right to drink responsibly, and have a good time. They already placed PV clubs from 16+ to 17+ two years ago. I think that is about enough.

Anyone causing fights or worse carrying wepons should be black listed from setting foot in PV area plus heavily fined.

A law must be implemented giving the right to police to make spot checks on people and if found carrying a knife must automatically be sent t 2 years in prison. This is not a joke. How can people in civilised countries feel safe.

Police already have that right. They can stop and search anyone within the territory of Malta. The only area they cannot stop and search is within the Customs area at the Arrivals hall of the airport. And this is only because The Customs department has that right.

Understandable!
In the future, whenever my two teenagers want to chill with their friends in Paceville, I will - from now on - make sure they have, apart from the usual pocket money and mobile phone, their knifes and a knuckle duster in their pockets...just in case they need it for self defense!
Hello!!!!
On a serious note and having heard and read so much about ongoing fights, stabbings and rapes, most of them taking place in PV , I wonder whether it would be wise to close down the whole establishment for a while till people learn to cope with each other and their fellow friend alcohol.

@Mrs C. Weitze
It would be unfair to close down all nighttime establishments in Paceville just because a percentage of the people there get involved in fights, stabbings rapes and whatnot. Rather, it would be better if, as Mr. Ostimani mentioned below, harsher laws are implemented, thus acting as a detterent

"the accused found himself in the midst of a fight and had to react in self-defence" Yes everyone carries a knife in his pocket, just in case he has to use it in self defence.

I'm starting to think that the CF at Cordin are over-populated which is probably why so many people go out on bail.

It should be five years automatic prison time if found guilty of carrying a knife.
"argued that the accused found himself in the midst of a fight and had to react in self-defence."
And he just happened to have a knife on him (allegedly).
That was handy.

In clubs in London and in Ibiza, security checks are performed by bouncers on anyone going in a bar/club...maybe we should follow suit and get these thugs out of our nightlife!

I wonder if you follow the world news . A young Italian youth of about 16 was knifed to death at Ibiza after a fight some two or three nights ago. Acording to his friends he was just set upon by a gang.
Somthing must be done . We cannot have Paceville turned into a jungle, however I wonder if it is already too late for that !
