Nearly 3,600 people applied for the third subsidy scheme on photovoltaic solar panels, in just nine days, by the deadline on Wednesday.
In all, 2,000 families could benefit from the EU-funded scheme though which applicants will get back 50 per cent of the money invested on their solar system, up to a maximum €3,000. They will also be paid for the energy they feed into the national grid at a rate of 25c per unit for Maltese households and 28c per unit for Gozitan households.
Resources Authority said those who qualify for the scheme will be notified by post.
The government is also planning to issue a call for tenders to lease 67,000 square metres on government buildings for the installation of PV panels.
