Late last Friday, I took my family on a routine, pleasant ice cream walk to Sliema next to the tower on Tower Road opposite Dingli Street and, as usual, we walked towards St Julians. We usually stop for a very good ice cream in the vicinity but I do not intend to promote anyone so I will not give any more clues on what we all consider an ice cream worth our regular visit.
As it happened, last Friday the village feast in that area, better known as Tal-Karmnu, was being celebrated. I refer to the Gothic church opposite the Neptunes’ water polo pitch at Balluta.
As we were walking along, which, incidentally, was well after 10 p.m., they started letting off the loud and dreadful fireworks. I am not referring to the display, which I understand is very beautiful, but to the bang!
I have to ask what is so nice about it? It is destructive and most annoying. It scares all the children and all the tourists too. I can’t understand why the ministers and all the big shots who live in that area don’t see this. I am also sure that all the hotels in the vicinity lose a considerable amount of repeat trade simply because of such typical Maltese selfishness.
Do something for Malta: Stop this nonsense!
