Carla Bruni-Sarkozy topped the list of the world’s most stylish individuals. The Duchess of Cambridge has made it on to the list for the first time as a member of the Royal Family.

It is the first time she has appeared on Vanity Fair’s list since 2008.

The Duchess was recognised for her “whirlwind of fashion successes” in the 72nd annual list.

Her wedding dress was famously designed by Sarah Burton, for Alexander McQueen.

She was joined by Barack and Michelle Obama, making their first appearance together on the best-dressed couples list.

Mrs Obama has been among the best-dressed ladies for the past four years, while the US President has only earned a spot once, in 2009.

French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy made the grade for the fourth time, but her husband, President Nicolas Sarkozy missed out again after featuring in the 2007 list.

Oscar-winning British actor Colin Firth made his inaugural appearance on the best-dressed men list, along with Hollywood star Justin Timberlake.

Fellow Britons on the list include actress Carey Mulligan and Formula 1 driver Jenson Button.

Christine Lagarde, managing director at the International Monetary Fund, makes the list for the first time.

She took over from former boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who resigned in May after being accused of sexually assaulting a maid in a New York hotel.

Actress Tilda Swinton, famed for her eccentric choice of outfits, is in the list for the second time.

Popstars Lady Gaga and Janelle Monae are among those featured in the “fashion originals” list.
