A German court has ruled that a man convicted of murdering an 11-year-old be awarded 3,000 euro in damages for mental pain after a police officer threatened violence during the search for the boy.
A Frankfurt state court said 36-year-old Magnus Gaefgen deserved compensation for a deputy police chief's threat in an effort to get details about the missing boy during a 2002 interrogation.
Jakob von Metzler was later found dead. Gaefgen was convicted in 2003 of murdering the child, the son of a prominent Frankfurt banker, and sentenced to life in prison.
Gaefgen had sued the state for pain and suffering caused by the threat. The officer was convicted of abuse of authority in 2004.
