One’s first day at a new job is always a daunting experience but Beau appears to have jumped into it with all four of his feet. Well, paws, to be precise.

Beau is the new guide dog for Joey Micallef, a staff member at the University’s Department of Pharmacy.

Mr Micallef lost his sight in a traffic accident in 1992 and the University has employed him as a telephone operator and receptionist ever since.

The two-year-old male champagne Labrador has been a guide dog since birth, trainedin France and Sicily, before meeting Mr Micallef for the first time in Malta.

Their training together is coordinated by the Malta Guide Dog Foundation and sponsored by the Malta Community Chest Fund.

Beau has not only helped Joey to be more mobile and efficient but has also added an extra feel-good factor to the department.
