Valletta business owners have not been given any information about works planned to be carried out in St Paul Street, the GRTU said.

The Times announced last month that St Paul Street, a mian artery since work on the City Gate project started, is to be closed for up to 11 weeks as from this month because of roadworks planned by the council.

The GRTU, Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises, said it had raised its strong objection that with the upper part of Valletta being one massive construction site with most thru passes closed, it was incredible and incomprehensible how anyone in his true senses could dream of also closing St Paul Street.

The chamber said it had expected GRTU proper consultation and an acceptable alternative traffic management plan but meetings kept being cancelled for no apparent reason and at short notice.

"Business owners in Valletta cannot and should never be treated in this manner as they are already under heavy pressure and suffering great losses."

The GRTU asked Public Dialogue Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said to ensure that the business community, commuters and consumers were treated with dignity.
