Unemployment stable at lowest end of EU scale
Malta's unemployment rate in June remained unchanged when compared to the previous month and the island has kept its positive ranking at the lowest end of the EU scale when it comes to people seeking employment.
New data issued by Eurostat this morning shows that Malta's unemployment rate last June stood at 6.2 per cent, the same as the rate registered in May and ,lower than the 6.9 per cent reached in June 2010.
In June, Malta had the fifth lowest unemployment rate among the EU's 27 member state and with a much lower rate that the average in the Euro area – which in June stood at 9.9 per cent, unchanged from May.
The lowest unemployment rate in the EU in June was registered by Austria (4 per cent) followed by the Netherlands (4.1 per cent). In the other hand, Spain, whose government has just announced early elections, topped the EU's unemployment scale in June, reaching 21 per cent.
Significantly, Germany, considered to be the EU's economic motor, has managed to slash its unemployment rate by a full 1 per cent in the last 12 months, indicating that the EU's economy is back on course of a string growth path.

How can one have a comfortable life on 194 euros per week!
Thats what one gets, before deductions, for 45 hours work as a bus driver with Arriva. Some of these drivers left from their traffic warden and security guard jobs, just to mention a few, to improve their wages. Is another extra 10 euros worth changing your job for! It looks like it is, with life being so expensive.
Are we living or surviving?

I tend to agree with you - however it seems that there are experts out there who thinks different from us.
According to reports in this paper the majority of drivers had joined the GWU and the drivers' conditions of work - presumably including the wages since these are the basic element of workers conditions,
- were agreed between Arriva and the GWU!

as many know many jobs are part-time with low wages and definite contracts .. some of which being monthly contracts. Even major banks today are employing people this way. Shame to our current government who is flattering himself with these statistics where in reality the job situation is much different. This shows how PN politics is cut off from everyday life of the normal citizen!

Fewer people work and make money in Malta, percentage-wise, than in any other EU country. We're at the very bottom. It's called Labour Participation; look it up. It gets even worse for people between 50 and 65; we're still at the bottom, but even more so than for the overall figure.
I'm thankful to the ToM that they changed the headline of 'deficit is down' (which gets the government supporters out in a carcade) to 'government debt up 8%'. Same news, different message.
In this respect, the low unemployment figure belies the fact that almost 50% of the population does not hold a job. Just over half the population has to provide for the other half.
Who thinks that this supposedly low unemployment figure is anything to celebrate, or something to criticise the opposition, should do well to retract his head from the sand.

For all those which are boasting with the news. Is a job with a 600Euro to a 900Euro wage called a sustainable job for you. Are all the people which have a part time job as their main job considered as having a sustainable job. In this counrty the government puts up a nice facade but beyond the facade it is all cracked and rotten and easilly toppled over. Nor Lawrence Gonzi and neighter Joseph Muscat will find a sollution because we have advertized our counrty as a cheap labour one and if we increase wages for us to have a decent living all these companies will pull out and leave a big vacuum in their wake. This is the Maltese economy we boast so much about, one small tremmor and it will all fall down like what happened in Greece.

None of the Maltese socialists have any comments when it comes to things associated to our country's economy. .. and that includes their beloved Joseph. Unemployment drops, number of people employed increases, tourism grows by 12% on the record year, the economy grows, and yet Labour has nothing to say.

Do you remember every month 'l-Orizzont' used to splash a headline " Il-Qghad rega ghola b'....' Now that this is history there is no headline anymore!! They try to alienate their readers with fairy tales! The same goes to Super fairy tale One!! Despite the international crisis Malta has managed to be one of the best European nations when it comes to unemployment

Try getting a bank loan when you are not a full-time employee.
If GONEZI is such a success why not hold an early election to strengthen his one-seat majority?

JM as usual is clutching at straws......He hasn't got anything to talk about, so he turns his attention to trivialities. He's got to say something after all - even if it is of no consequence to anybody - otherwise people will forget he exists.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Malta has a low percentage of people REGISTERING for work. That's not the same as many jobs available. In fact, Malta has the lowest percentage of people working in the entire EU, and of those that hold a job, a sizeable part is in the public sector.
Could you please explain how this coukd ever be considered a 'success'?

...you forgot the high investment from other countries who are setting up their business on our islands, and that our country, THANKS to the EU and it's funds, is changing into a beatiful first world country with developments in infrastructure happening every where...
Heh... and yesterday I read from a Lejber supporter that he is urging people to go out in the streets and do like the greeks... (break everything) ...to that person I say, thank YOU for reminding me of what the MLP WAS AND STILL IS.
