Maltese in London to be interviewed on Amy Winehouse death

UK police are to interview a Maltese in London, Tony Azzopardi  after he alleged to have taken singer Amy Winehouse to buy crack cocaine and heroin hours before she died.

The 56-year-old, who says he became friends with Amy, 27, through her former husband Blake Fielder-Civil, has promised to do all he can to help police piece together her final hours, the Daily Mirror reports.

"I want Amy's family to know the truth about what happened. I want to help them out – but I'm worried about my safety."

He said he was nervous about possible "comebacks" from the dealer, describing him as a local "Mr Big" in the Camden area of North London.

Several people claim to have seen Amy outside Camden bar The Good Mixer a week ago on Friday evening, the night before she was found dead.

Azzopardi claims she pulled alongside him in a black cab as he walked near a pub called The Eagle at 11.30pm.

He says she asked him to help her buy drugs and they went in the taxi to West Hampstead, where he made a call to a dealer from a phone box.

As they waited, he says Amy told him she was annoyed that Fielder-Civil had been ringing her from prison, and "hassling" her.

Azzopardi said the dealer, who he claims was known to Amy, arrived in a car and handed over drugs. He says she paid £1,200 for half an ounce of crack and the same of heroin.

Later, he says, she dropped him off in nearby Archway before she went home in the early hours of Saturday. Amy was found at 4pm that day. Police said they found no evidence of drugs or drug paraphenalia in her home.

Doctors revealed she had been dead for several hours.

"When Amy dropped me off, she gave me a kiss on the cheek and that was it – the last time I saw her," Azzopardi said.

"She looked good, you know, fit – like she'd been clean for a while and filled out a bit. I couldn't believe it when I found out she was gone."

I second that and agree with you Mr.Davidson entirely.People entering Britain should be thoroughly checked for any misdoings in the country of origin and as you say the Maltese and the rest coming to Britian are no exception. JeffMead Snr.

@ Mr. Davidson and Mr. Mead - Why are you putting every Maltese in one basket. There were and still are Maltese imigrants in the UK who had to leave their homeland in the 50ies and 60ies and so on, for the simple reason that we had just come out of the war and had to find employment in the UK since at the time we were a colony and had every right. I can assure you that most of these Maltese were honest and hardworking people and only a small percentage of these Maltese finish up in Soho district. I can assure you that there were and still are British who are as bad if not worse than the Maltese. Ever heard of the Cray bros. I can assure you that illegal drugs started in Britain long before the Maltese landed on your shores, so show a little respect to an island that gave it all when it mattered and all it got for it was a lousy cross.

TuffyDavies Davidson.....

There are good and bad from every country and every walk of life....

Whilst I get upset about people taring all Brits ( I,m on) with the same brush.......I also get upset with people taring all Maltese with the same brush.....or any nation for that matter..
and to my mind...a drug dealer/ taker...is just that........a druggie......whoever he is and wherever he,is from....

When I read some of the comments to a lot of the stories in this paper..........it seems we are all out to score points off each other.....my dads bigger than your dad syndrome......when did the world get so ANGRY ???

That aside......a young lady has lost her life......a daughter,a sister....etc etc.......and all we do is bicker.....
Its tragic when someones dies so young...and even more tragic when the circumstances are posibly through life choices......
If this man did what hes says he did.....and so publicly......then I fear for his life too....but again...thats his life choice......

Cant we just remember that somone died ?

From...a quiet ,unassuming, not covered in tatoos, non beer swilling, non foul mouthed searing Brit..

Tell me which newspaper you're reading cause I haven't seen anything bad linked to Malta for quite a long time. So saying that most of what you read originates from this country could be quite a lie! It's easy to sit back in front of your computer and stereotype. Although I agree that people coming from abroad should be thoroughly checked I think that the first part of your argument is most disrespectful and makes undue and narrow-minded false accusations. You should maybe look at what your own people do before criticizing others, which is usually much harder to do.

Yes that is very true Mrs.Grech, The Maltese* especially in London east area and also the north of the UK are only known for their bad habits they bring with them over here in England, if its not the old Soho prost.district what used to be known for in the 60's) it is now their drug habbit or bent dealings, as usual trying to make an easy buck.

@ TuffyDavies Davidson:

What you're saying is quite patronizing coming from a country where people get murdered for a chinese take-away by gangs who are British themselves. If you really thought that the British are so perfect (and to my opinion no nationality is, because at the end of the day if you want to be a drug dealer you'll be one no matter where you come from) you would only be looking at the Times of Malta to criticize others out of a superiority complex.

Yes, Mr. Tony Gatt, drugs and alcohol are a terrible mix !. I liked Amy Winehouse too but she has now joined the list of those who previously gone down that same path.

Ms. Amy Winehouse is now gone and never to return. May her soul rest in everlasting peace, now.

Yes, I get your point. The "lousy" bit was unnecessary, I was not Amy Winehouse's biggest fan, but there is no way you could call her singing "lousy"
