Gasco has taken delivery of six large purpose-built LPG storage tanks which will double its storage capacity and thus ensure better security of supply.
The company, a sister company of Liquigas, took over the gas operations of Enemalta last year and is currently building a €20m gas storage and bottling facility at Benghajsa.
The new tanks were manufactured by Tanko S.p.A. of Italy. They are 42 metre long with a diameter of 7.5meters and come with the latest safety features.
The new facility will be commissioned in autumn next year, when the company's total storage capacity will increase from the present 2,300 tons to 4,800 tons. Following that, the old Qajjenza plant will be closed down.
The Bengħajsa plant is being constructed according to the highest international standards to ensure a consistently reliable, safe and environmentally-friendly supply of LPG in Malta. Fully respecting the stringent EU criteria as established in the Seveso II Directives, the plant includes - apart from the new LPG storage tanks - a pipeline from the importation terminal to the facility, a cylinder filling plant, a road tanker filling point to deliver bulk LPG to its clients, and an administration building.
"We are confident that the usage of LPG in Malta will increase due to its advantage of being a cleaner and more efficient fuel," said Roberto Capelluto, Gasco Energy's Chief Executive Officer.
"Gasco Energy Ltd is significantly increasing its LPG storage facilities to cater for present and future requirements of the Maltese market. The company will be maximizing the efficiency of gas bottling and storage operations through the application of modern technology and efficient work practices, while ensuring that appropriate quality, environmental and health standards are maintained at all times." said Roberto Capelluto, Gasco Energy's Chief Executive Officer.
