Malta-Gozo tunnel link

Perhaps it would help the indefatigable George Galea of Fontana (sic) if he were aware that in March 2006 I wrote on this page in favour of a tunnel link between Gozo and Malta.

I was not, however, proposing a three-lane farm track or potential death trap, but a multi-lane undersea highway similar to those super-efficient, economically-run, brightly-lit examples between Hong Kong and mainland China. Indirectly, I was also suggesting that Malta gets its great buddies in China to design it, fund it and build it.

I mention this only in an effort to appease Mr Galea, who obviously believes that anything short of blind support for his personal tunnel vision amounts to total opposition to it.

I remain of the opinion, meanwhile, that since there’s always money around for mad schemes, it would be better to make some sensible investment – first – towards providing better health services, some local industry and a more frequent ferry service for Gozo.

I don’t suppose, however, that will help much. Mr Galea writes in the manner of somebody always determined to have the last word...
