More families should have been included in the government’s decision to give one-off compensation to cushion the fuel price impact, Żminijietna – Voice of the Left, said yesterday.

“It is unfair that other families with a low income and pensioners are denied the right for energy compensation due to ‘means testing’. The government should adopt a policy that protects basic consumption while penalising wasteful practices,” Żminijietna said in a statement.

A total of 62,365 individuals and 34,195 families will receive a one-off government payment in September to compensate for the recent increase in the price of fuel.

It would be fairer if the government gave a one-off payment to every family retroactively from October 1, 2010, the pressure group added.
