U-16 girls land bronze in Andorra

The Malta U-16 completed a positive week in Andorra when they beat Monaco 49-45 in the play-off for the bronze medal in La Vella yesterday.

Sandro Farrugia’s girls, who on Friday were beaten by Cyprus 39-14 in the semi-finals, trailed early on and after the opening two quarters they were lagging by two points, 21-19.

However, the Maltese stepped up their game by several notches, and inspired by the excellent shooting of Gabriella Mifsud, they managed to turn the game around to start the final 10 minutes 34-29 ahead.

The Monegasque side tried to get back into the match but the Maltese girls ably administered their lead to secure the victory and third place in the overall standings.

Mifsud was the game’s leading scorer with 19 points followed by Monaco’s Emma Zeghdar who potted 14 points.

Earlier, this month the men’s U-16 team placed fourth in the European Championships Division C held in San Marino.
