High on confidence after their 11-8 victory over Sliema McDonald’s in midweek, San Ġiljan Giuseppe’s will be looking to justify their credentials as potential title challengers when they face champions Neptunes Emirates tomorrow at the National Pool.

The two neighbouring rivals go into their direct clash level on eight points at the top of Division One but Neptunes have a game in hand.

Initial predictions tipped Neptunes and Sliema as the two exclusive contenders for the league crown but San Ġiljan’s defeat of the Blues has instantly prompted suggestions that Karl Izzo’s men are not to be taken lightly in the race for the main honour.

Neptunes, who have already captured the Knock-Out trophy, are regarded as surefire favourites to retain the title but they will be wary of San Ġiljan’s growing threat.

While San Ġiljan are fast emerging as one of the most competitive sides in the top flight, Neptunes have been the stand-out team since day one of the summer trek.

The Reds opened their Division One commitments with a 21-8 thrashing of Sirens Ritter Sport.

Steve Camilleri, dubbed by many as Neptunes’ ‘extra foreigner’ because of his extraordinary talent, hit five goals against Sirens, one more than Montenegrin ace Vladimir Gojkovic.

This evening’s Division One match is a clash between the bottom two teams as Sirens take on 3CX Exiles.

Sirens have one point while Exiles have yet to open their account.

Both teams are under pressure to take maximum points from their encounter today as a defeat would undermine their chances of making the play-offs.

Programme

Today: Division Two 6.15 p.m. Marsascala vs Valletta; Division One 7.30 p.m. Sirens vs Exiles.

Tomorrow: Division Two 5.15 p.m. Ta’ Xbiex vs Otters; Division One 6.30 p.m. San Ġiljan vs Neptunes.
