Ramla appeal turned down

The planning authority appeals tribunal has turned down an appeal on the Ramla l-Ħamra project.
The controversial project, which would have consisted of a complex of 23 villas with pools on the slopes of the Ramla hillside, had originally been granted a permit by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority. However, after a public outcry, and due to the fact that the developers had failed to declare that their site included a parcel of public land, the authority revoked the permit and the developers appealed.
Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, together with Gozitan NGO Save Ramla, yesterday welcomed the decision.
The FAA said it was one of huge significance, since reinstating the permit would have opened the whole Ramla hillside to development.
The site contains archaeological remains and endangered plants on the sand dunes.
“This is a most welcome result for the preservation of Gozo and Malta’s rural heritage, and a credit to the Mepa reform and Eco-Gozo commitment,” the FAA said.

Fantastic news! Many thanks to all the NGO’s involved and their dedicated and hard-working members!
Thanks too, to those at MEPA who have finally seen the light.
Let’s hope this will send a message to the ruthless developers and estate agents who want to develop Hondoq as well.

This is excellent news and Malta owes a big thank you to FAA and Save Ramla for taking up and winning this fight. It is also good to see that Mepa have come out on the side of good sense in this case. We must however remember the stupid marina development idea which is still hanging over Hondoq Bay like the Sword of Damocles. Building at Ramla would have spoilt the look of the entire area and likewise a marina at Hondoq would destroy the area for the ordinary people. So please let us now ensure that Hondoq is left alone.

Well done. Let's hope that the appeal for the 'Wied Tal-Maghluq' application in Marsaskala is also turned down to show that we really care about the environment and not just pay lip service to it.

Praise is due where merited ... may future decisions be more like this, and may they stick to their guns and not waiver in the sight of money
