Thousands of protesters angry about Spain's economic woes have once again filled Madrid's downtown Sol square, many having marched for weeks from cities across Spain.

Five columns of marchers converged on the square where some had camped out in for three weeks in May.

That protest struck a chord with sympathisers throughout Spain and Europe where similar camps were set up.

Marchers say today's protest aims to drive home young people's indignation at high unemployment and a political leadership they see as uncaring, corrupt and inept.

Two years of recession have left Spain with 21% unemployment - the highest in the 17-nation eurozone - and saddled with debt. Joblessness for those aged 16 to 29 stands at about 35%.
