A foundation called the Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency is taking part in an EU-funded project aimed at enhancing mobility in the areas affected by weak demand of transport.

It aims to boost the availability of transport by using cutting-edge technologies and at the same time reduce the use of private cars.

Topics under discussion include the feasibility of applying a virtual social network to the car sharing culture, particularly among youngsters.

Public and private stakeholders involved in planning, transport, business entities and education in Malta are invited to participate in the project.

The agency is undertaking a study focusing on the use of private business initiatives in industrial areas and info mobility among University students.

In densely populated areas, such as Marsa, it is more viable for employers to provide collective transport themselves rather than paying to provide parking space for employees.

Info-mobility/mobility management is one of the major functions of GSM or UMTS networks that allow mobile phones to work. The aim of mobility management is to track where the subscribers are, and allowing calls, SMS and other mobile networks to be delivered to them.

The project will provide an opportunity to take advantage of already existing social networks at the workplace and on the internet in the aim of optimising people’s daily transportation logistics.
