The Times photojournalist Darrin Zammit Lupi has been chosen to represent Malta at an EU exhibition in London with a photo of an immigrant being rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta.
The exhibition, Active Witness – An Exhibition Of Photography To Celebrate The European Year Of Volunteering, is at Europe House, the seat of the EU Representation in London.
Malta’s High Commissioner to the UK, Joseph Zammit Tabona praised Mr Zammit Lupi’s work and remarked what an honour it was to have a Maltese photographic work of such high calibre displayed in London.
To celebrate the European Year of Volunteering, the exhibition brought together 27 works by photographers representing the 27 member states. The work deals directly with the voluntary sector or with closely related social issues.
The selected works cover subjects ranging from homelessness to displaced populations, social care, rehabilitation and disaster relief. The aim of the exhibition is not only to illustrate circumstances and issues of concern but also to raise awareness on the importance of active participation and volunteering as a positive response.
Mr Zammit Lupi, who is also a stringer for Reuters, won the Malta Journalism Awards for Press Photography four times and the Sport Photography award three times.
