The cost of using domestic mail will go up by 1c next Friday, meaning one will spend 20c to post a letter to a local address.

The increase was approved by the Malta Communications Authority, which said it rejected requests by Maltapost with regard to the registration of mail, the weight of domestic mail (over 50 grams) and bulk mail. It said the requests would be considered within a future price control mechanism.

The MCA said it arrived at its decision after a thorough review of Maltapost’s cost accounting system. The regulator said it took into consideration the impact of the proposed price increases on affordability. Its analysis revealed that, based on the latest Household Budgetary Survey, the share of postal-related household expenditure per annum was quite low, at about €18, down from €26 registered in the previous 2000 survey, indicating that the impact of the tariff changes on household expenditure would be minimal.
