Rugby Union: The Fiji Rugby Union has shied away from including an army officer in its team to play the All Blacks on Friday, avoiding a confrontation with the New Zealand authorities. The FRU last week named Leone Nakarawa, a 23-year-old soldier, in its 35-member squad for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand starting in September, despite Wellington’s long-standing ban on Fijian soldiers entering the country.
Golf: Angelo Que amazingly shot two holes-in-one in preparation for his defence of the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters which starts today. The two athletes booked their places in the Kenya team for the August 27 to September 4 championship at the national trials last weekend.
Triple Jump: World indoor triple jump cham-pion Teddy Tamgho, of France, has withdrawn from next month’s World Championships with a fractured ankle joint. Tamgho, whose personal best of 17.98m is the third longest jump in the event’s history, sustained the injury on Saturday during the U-23 Euro champion-ships in Ostrava.
