Southend Volleyball Club are currently hosting Italian players from the Modena-based Scuola di Pallavolo Anderlini for a training camp here.
With more than a 1,000 re-gistered players, aged between three and 18, Scuola di Pallavolo Anderlini is one of the biggest and best volleyball schools in Europe.
Results obtained over the past 15 years put the organisation second to none. Around 100 coaches are engaged by the school to give their professional services.
In fact, Italian volleyball has seen its best years in Modena through the legendary Panini Modena team with one of the star players at that era being Rodolfo Giovenzana, later founder of Scuola di Pallavolo Anderlini.
The partnership between Southend Volleyball Club and Scuola di Pallavolo Anderlini has now entered its third year, with exchanges for directors, coaches and players happening on a regular basis.
Such exchanges are vital for the various initiatives involved that mainly started last year with a mini-volley course that was attended by over 40 coaches.
A Sport Summer School, the first of its kind on our shores, followed. It was directed by coaches provided by the Modena school.
The volleyball camp is also a perfect opportunity for Italian students who combine the learning of English and the sport.
During their stay here, the 30 Scuola di Pallavolo players will also tour the islands and visit historical places, including Valletta and Mdina.
This training camp is being made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Kunsill Malti għall-iSport and the Malta Volley-ball Association.
