This area of trees is a small area within the Wied ir-Rum valley system and hosts small riparian woodland of the hoary elm (ulmu) which is very rare and critically endangered in the Maltese islands. The woodland consists of some large, old specimens but young trees and shoots are also present, indicating that this population is expanding.

The area has been scheduled since 1996 as an Area of Ecological Importance and is also designated as a Natura 2000 site under the EC Habitats Directive. This site is also Nature Reserve and a Special Area of Conservation of International Importance.

Mepa declared this site as a Tree Protected Area on May 24, in accordance with the provisions of the Trees and Woodlands Protection Regulations (2011) as per Government Notice number 473/11.
