Accused says stabbed bouncer was defending him

Jonathan Portelli, 24 of Birzebbuga, this morning pleaded not guilty to having stabbed a bouncer, Michael Zahra, at Shadows Lounge in Paceville on Saturday morning.

He was also accused of attempting to seriously injure Sandro Dimech, slightly injuring Mr Dimech and unlawfully carrying a knife.

Defence counsel Gianella Caruana Curran said her client was attacked in the club. CCTV footage showed how a group of people had surrounded him and his girlfriend. The bouncer who was injured was actually trying to defend her client.

The case continues. Mr Portelli was granted bail.

What does 'carry a knife' mean? It is pretty common for sports fishermen to carry knives. Should these also get 5 years?

That's right. No one goes to Paceville with a knife for hunting... That's intent.

Nick Zarb, are you a sport fisherman? Do you usually go fishing in a bar?
