Rebekah Brooks, the former chief executive of News International, has been arrested by police in connection with allegations of corruption and phone hacking, Scotland Yard said.

A police spokesman said the woman, who they did not name, was arrested by appointment at a London police station at approximately midday and remains in custody.

The arrest is the latest development in the phone hacking scandal, which led to the closure of the News of the World, which Brooks used to edit.

This is the 10th arrest since the Metropolitan Police launched a fresh investigation into phone hacking in January.
