The Labour Party and the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses yesterday underlined the need for a new system to reduce disruption for hospital patients, nurses and those residing in homes for the elderly during elections.

Delegations from the two sides met to discuss the difficulties faced by patients and residents at homes when they need to vote.

Among the changes both sides agreed upon was the need to have a polling station at Mater Dei Hospital instead of taking the patients to vote in their respective home villages.

It was suggested that St Vincent de Paul Home could have more than one polling station, thus reducing disruption for the residents.

The reform should also apply to Gozo General Hospital, Mount Carmel Hospital and Karin Grech Hospital.
