I had known Mary Fenech Adami for many years but more closely during the months prior to Malta’s accesssion to the EU. I discovered her tenacity, her quiet determination coupled with her faith in the Maltese people making the right choices. A woman who had never experienced working outside the home, yet she always supported the work that we, the National Council of Women, carry out. “Life has changed” she often repeated during our conversations. “You are doing a good job, God bless you!”
A strong believer in family unity, she always supported the council’s initiatives, often expressing her concern for working mothers. She understood that time brings change and change needs to be dealt with.
She was never lacking in topics of conversation; I always enjoyed listening to the “stories” of her life, describing a variety of experiences, her immense ability in remembering names, places and the circumstances related to them – a veritable history!
Over the years, I have grown to understand what lies behind her love for her family, her fondness for her grandchildren, her understanding of her husband’s different roles with a simplicity that she retained all her life; as wife of the President of Malta, not even San Anton Palace would lure her away from her dear home in Birkirkara!
As I look back, I realise why I enjoyed listening to her without any wish to interrupt her as she related everyday experiences – something that I shall always carry with me – the wisdom of her simplicity,
