Increases in both vehicles and commuters crossing between Malta and Gozo were registered in the second quarter this year, compared with the same period last year.

The National Statistics Office said that commuters between Malta and Gozo increased by 3.9 per cent, totalling 1,096,880 when compared to the corresponding period in 2010.

Concurrently, the number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went up by 2.2 per cent, totalling 285,641.

The highest number of commuters was recorded in June (378,899) or 34.5 per cent of the total for the quarter.

The number of trips in the period under review stood at 4,820, a decrease of 1.5 per cent over the corresponding period last year.

The majority of trips took place in June - 1,644 - or 34.1 per cent of total trips for this quarter.
