Anzhi: Former Brazil international Roberto Carlos has his sights set on becoming president of Russian Premiership side Anzhi Makhachkala after hanging up his boots in 2013, local press reported yesterday. “I’m set to play for Anzhi two more years until the end of my contract. After that I will resign and take the post of the club president,” the 2002 World Cup winning defender said.

Rangers: Rangers endured more frustration in the transfer market yesterday after failing with a bid for Espanyol defender Raul Rodriguez. Rangers submitted an offer for 23-year-old Rodriguez following several days of talks with the Spanish club. But the deal – said to be worth £400,000 for a player who has made just 10 first-team appearances for his club looks to have fallen short.

Rost: Veteran Hamburg goalkeeper Frank Rost is waving goodbye to the German league after 426 Bundesliga appearances and 19 years to play for Red Bull New York in the Big Apple. The 38-year-old will join New York’s France star Thierry Henry and Mexico’s Rafael Marquez to play Major League Soccer (MLS) and is expected to be available for tomorrow’s game away at Chivas USA.

Osvaldo: Espanyol striker Dani Osvaldo says he is happy to stay at the Barcelona-based side and claims he would like to captain the Catalan club to show his commitment to the team. Osvaldo, who has been linked with moves to Tottenham, Fulham and Atletico Madrid this summer, said: “I’m happy to be here,” he told El Mundo Deportivo. “I’m only thinking about Espanyol and it shows that I want to stay; I’m focused on the work here and on the team.”

Hierro: Malaga have installed Fernando Hierro as their new general manager. Hierro, the former Real Madrid star, recently stepped down from his job as sporting director of Spain’s national side, who became world and European champions during his tenure. Hierro had initially intended to take a sabbatical from the game but was won over by the ambition of the Malaga hierarchy and has agreed a four-year deal.
