Ex-FIFA VP Warner hints at comeback
Former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, who is also Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Works, hinted at a return to football administration.
“There is some unfinished business which I will have to do in both FIFA and CONCACAF at the appropriate time and who knows I may go back. The only expert on FIFA in this country is me and in the fullness of time I will tell this country what FIFA is and what FIFA is not,” Warner was quoted as saying.
“I will not say no because you can never tell what the future holds.”
Warner resigned from his posts as FIFA vice-president, CONCACAF president and Caribbean Football Union (CFU) president last month after being indicted by the FIFA Ethics Committee following bribery allegations.
Wolves snap up defender Johnson
Wolves have signed central defender Roger Johnson in a seven-million-pound deal from Birmin-gham City.
Johnson, who signed a four-year contract, becomes Wolves’ third signing of the summer after midfielder Jamie O’Hara from Tottenham and goalkeeper Dorus de Vries from Swansea.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has been a long-time admirer of Johnson and has been tracking him since the end of last season.
Johnson has also made it clear he wants to remain in the top flight since the Blues were relegated at the end of last season.
England duo join Queen’s Park
Queens Park Rangers announced they had signed England inter-nationals Kieron Dyer and Jay Bothroyd ahead of their return to Premier League action.
Midfielder Dyer, 32, has joined on a one-year contract after becoming a free agent following West Ham’s relegation last season.
Bothroyd, 29, also a free agent, has arrived from Cardiff after the Welsh club missed out on promo-tion to the Premier League during last season’s play-offs.
Bothroyd signed a three-year deal in a move marking a return for the striker, who was with Rangers’ centre of excellence from the age of nine before moving to Arsenal.”
Roma to raise Vucinic price
Roma have warned clubs interested in Mirko Vucinic that the asking price for the Montenegro interna-tional is set to increase.
The 27-year-old forward wants to leave the Giallorossi outfit this summer and has been strongly linked with a move to Juventus in recent months.
“It’s Vucinic who wants to leave,” Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini said. “If it was up to us, he could stay. We have granted him his wish to listen to eventual offers that arrive but Juve has not stepped forward so far.
“I can say that until tomorrow afternoon (today), Vucinic’s price will be the same as it is now, but after that he will cost more.”
No offers for Sneijder – Branca
Inter technical director Marco Branca insisted the Italian giants have not received any official offers for Wesley Sneijder.
Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for the 27-year-old, as have big-spending Spanish side Malaga, but Inter say they have not received any concrete bid for the playmaker who is under contract until June 2015.
Branca said on the club’s website: “No, there has not been an official offer and there has never been the intention to listen to them.
“Hence, the player is getting on with his work and so are we.
“It’s not surprising that Wesley Sneijder is a player that is liked by many teams, including the strongest in the world like our team is.
“He is not for sale.”
Milan not chasing Pastore – Galliani
Milan are not in the race to sign Palermo playmaker Javier Pastore, according to club administrator Adriano Galliani.
Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini revealed earlier this week that an Italian club is among the contenders to sign Pastore.
The Argentina international is one of the hottest properties in the transfer market and is a reported target of Chelsea and Manchester City.
“Pastore? The Italian club which Zamparini refers to is not Milan,” said Galliani.
Galliani has also dismissed ongoing speculation that Real Madrid midfielder Kaka would move back to the Rossoneri this summer.
Santana leaves Viola for Napoli
Serie A club Napoli have signed Argentinian winger Mario Alberto Santana.
Santana has joined the Naples outfit as a free agent after leaving Fiorentina last month.
The 29-year-old has penned down a three-year contract with Walter Mazzarri’s side.
Santana becomes Napoli’s third signing in a week following the arrival of Swiss midfielder Gokhan Inler from Udinese and Uruguay centre-back Miguel Angel Britos from Bologna.
He joins another former Fiorentina player who was a free agent, Marco Donadel, at the Stadio San Paolo.
Napoli have also confirmed the arrival of goalkeeper Roberto Colombo from Triestina.
