The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that it hopes to reach a decision on Olympic champion Cesar Cielo’s doping case before the World Championships begin in Shanghai on July 24.
CAS received an appeal from FINA in midweek against the decision by the Brazilian federation to let their swimmer off with a warning despite testing positive for the banned diuretic furosemide at the national championships in May.
Cielo and the three other swimmers implicated in the case are allowed to compete pending a decision, but CAS will aim to hold an emergency hearing, as long as all parties agree.
“If the parties agree, we will try to accelerate things with the intention of reaching a decision before July 24,” the court said in a statement.
Cesar Cielo, a world champion in 2009 over 50 and 100 metres and Olympic champion over 50 metres in 2008, also had the five titles he won at the Brazilian national championships provisionally annulled.
